NewsGrabber and phpNuke
Ok, I’ve released NewsGrabber 0.2 for phpNuke. I’ve actually released it last night and I’ve just found out that it was already downloaded more then 60 times (in less then 10 hours). Well, I didn’t expect that amount of interest… My little Downloads module modification seems to be downloaded well, too. Funny. Never saw myself as a web-programmer.
If interest will be high enough I might even prepare my current version of NewsGrabber for release. I use I much more advanced version I’ve improved this year (NewsGrabber 0.2 was coded about a year ago).
Post all reactions and comments over here.
I really need this application. Especially the new one. Because I was told that I would not be able to use Xdmp because my site is U.S. political and religious in nature. Please release the new version. Thanks!
Not had any success with Newsgrabber yet. It initially came up with some error messages about the relevant files being in the wrong directory - was looking for them in the global script include directory for some reason. However, even when they were put into there, the script seems to be unable to update the news with whatever it gleans from the website.
Thanks for releasing it anyway. It is a great start for me to now attempt to adapt it for this site’s particular nuances. BTW, am running PhP-Nuke 6.8 which may be the reason for the failure.

NewsGrabber 0.3
Followed your readme.txt and installed as directed. Went to admin section and scanned site as directed. Doesn’t work.
Do I need to change the default values in newsgrabber.php?
Did you use a non-default (reccomended) php.ini?
Neither are mentioned in the readme so stressing that folks follow your instructions isn’t helpful.
On PHP Nuke 6.5, I uploaded the files as instructed. I ran the NewsGrabber for the 3 real sites. Each time I saw something similar to this:
Reading http://www.newscientist.com/news/ … Done
Removing non-news header … Done
Removing non-news footer … Done
— Parsed -1 news items.
But nothing ends up in the queue. Any ideas?
John, I was retesting NewsGrabber 0.3 and it worked fine, so I can’t really find a bug.
However, the parsed news counter is only left at -1 if no news at all were scanned (for some reason). I would suggest you’ll check the newscientist.php profile and make sure you’re using the new ones that came with newsgrabber 0.3. The ones from 0.2 will not work correctly with the new version of the script.
How are the other profiles work? ok? Can you grab news from phpnuke.org and from slashdot.org ?
I didn’t install 0.2. I only installed 0.3. They all show the information I posted earlier but they don’t make it into the submission queue. Is 0.3 the same version you referred to as the version you are using on your site or is this just an updated 0.2. Maybe I should wait for the new one. What I want to do is to parse http://www.newsmax.com, http://www.drudgereport.com, http://www.wnd.com and others looking for keywords like Supreme Court, Abortion, Law, Religion, etc and if the article or headline mentions one of those keywords it would add that news article to the queue. Is something like this possible? Where you could have different keywords for each profile created. I don’t want all news on those sites just ones that pertain to my site’s mission statement. I would be willing to pay you if you could help me modify what you have to do that. If you are interested, let me know. Thanks!

great idea but facing the same problem, I read the readme.txt, it does what John mentions and does not feed the submitted section. I am running PHP Nuke 6.7. The keyword function over the google news site would be a great addon. Can’t wait to see how this will turn out once it works. Thanks
Just tried the 0.3 version of the script. However, as before I am getting the same problems that John has.
However, will attempt to modify the script when I have a moment!
