First I want to offer my sympathies for what has just happened at your university. Its truly shocking and not sure words could offer enough consolation.
I have always been very keen to visit Israel and will do so for a week in September. Many friends have told me that now is obviously the WORST time to come and that I should cancel my trip…but I assume its still reasonably safe to visit Jeruselum and the Old City. Besides, I don’t like living in fear — nor cancelling improtant things because of worrying about things out of my control.
Anyway, if you have a moment (obviously whenever you can) — would you let me know if things are reasonably safe enough for a visitor — or if this is simply a bad time to consider being a tourist. Would be great to hear from someone actually living there.

Florida. I have always wanted to tell someone in your position in Israel
society what I think the average American in my part of the country thinks
about what you are going through. It seems to me that the situation is this way…Israel only makes
military action when it is forced to, by an action of violence to itself by
terrorists. Israel attacks systematically, and quite effectivly, the persons
responsible for the terrorist acts. The more effective Israel is at
targeting the terrorists, and the closer they get to their leaders, the more
the uproar from the country’s who have the most to gain by supporting the
terrorists. As you get closest to achieving the goal of actually putting a
stop to these activities, the clamor from all sides…even your allies is
thunderous in its demand to stop…stop picking on the bullies while they
are down…play fair! What the people that I know think, is what any decent person would
think…you cannot at any cost, let the bully win. Don’t give in, to even the loudest of noises when
you know you are right. If an American policeman was trying to capture someone who had commited a horrendous crime, and there were civilians injured by accident…there would be no-one who would try and equate the policeman with the killer…no rational person would equate the killers of your civilians, who do this purposely, with your soldiers who might harm someone by accident while pursuing these killers. You must stop the terrorists from having the
capabilities to create the terror. You may not be able to stop the
terrorists from all actions against you, but you can stop the persons who created the
actions from ever causing more.
One thing that we universally admire is your military. We see you as having
the best in many ways. We admire most your ability to find terrorists. We
recognize to what extent you keep your promise to never give up until the
perpetrators are hunted down. This in the long run, is a true deterrent.
It is the extent of your follow through…your commitment…that makes you a
wonderful country. Your commitment to each other and to Israel. To get back
on your feet every single time, to be unwavering in your path, this is what
we admire.
I guess that after Sept. 11, I do understand what it feels like to wonder if
something like that could happen in my town. We are heavy in military
presense, and we do think about this. But, I cannot even imagine what it
must be like to worry that I might get blown to bits by going to a disco. It
is unbearable to me to imagine such a way of life. The choice to stand
strong, until your country perservers is the right and only course.
